Finally…A Finished Room (sort of)

So, it’s been a few weeks since I posted and while I feel like we are honestly working around the clock on this house, I also feel at times (most times) like we have nothing new to show. There’s so much little stupid work that has to get done that isn’t glamorous or fun to show but this weekend we tasked ourselves with finishing at least one room. Parker’s was the easy choice as it was sooooooo close to being finished, but then, as is always the case, there was an “issue” that forced us to switch course, but it’s 99% done so I’m counting it as a win.

Parker’s room had the largest closet in the house (and it’s still not a big closet) but what was so weird was that it literally had 2 doors side by side and they both opened to the same space so we cannot for the life of us figure out what on earth prompted someone to add a 2nd closet door in. When Drew went to order doors, just just counted them all up and ordered both doors for this weird closet. I said out loud one day after we had placed the “special order” for the doors (translation, we will charge you to bring these back) “Why don’t we just put in one?” And he looked at me and said “Ummm…let’s make design changes before we order things.” So I let it go…for now.

Seriously, how weird is this? The 2 doors on the left are the closet doors. That weird cubby all the way on the right is a crawl space to the attic over the kitchen but since we will be raising the ceiling on that space when we get it going, that cubby will soon become built in bookshelves. In the meantime, we set out to install the closet doors this weekend and get the trim finished. Door #1 went in like a dream. Door #2, however, was a jacked-up mess (again, no idea what someone was thinking) and after half a day spent trying to make the door we ordered fit, I took a step back and said “Why don’t we just drywall it in and call it a day?” Of course by this point Drew had cut down the door so it wasn’t going back but I didn’t care if we lost the money. He was getting too frustrated by a freaking closet door and I Just wanted it done.

dsc_0357-1So he went to work (thankfully drywalling tends to be a one-man operation). And worked late into the night cutting drywall, taping, mudding, then running the fan. Second coat of mud the next night after work, then more fan. Third and final coat the next morning so it was ready for sanding and painting that night after work.

After getting the final piece of base in place (we decided the guys did such a great job on our ceilings that we don’t even need crown in the kids’ rooms…yes, at this point we are looking for fewer things to do everyday) we called it a day – and a success. Here’s the after – you would never guess there used to be a door there. Oh, and we opted for the simple doorknobs and Drew geniusly painted the doors with one of his many new toys (he is loving this house if for no other reason than he’s getting to buy lots of new toys), a gravity-feed paint sprayer and they look amazing. Yay us. Progress. We love seeing progress.dsc_0364-1

Just don’t ask me what the backside looks like. That might take a little longer to cross off the list. Ha.
