The Best Laid Plans

The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry

I had this week all planned out for the kitchen…it was crunch time. We had the inspection scheduled last Friday, then drywall crew scheduled to be here Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, cabinet installers here today (Wednesday) and tomorrow, countertop template measurement on Friday and then I could start moving alllllllll of my kitchen stuff out of every other room in the house (literally – liquor in Emma’s room, wine glasses in ours, giant stock pot in a bathroom).

And yet, here is my kitchen as of this morning….sigh. That’s the drywall & durarock Drew and I managed to hang last night at 10:00. Ugh.

I’m a planner. I hate spontaneity (and surprises….I loathe surprises). So I was ready for this week and sooooooo excited to finally see my navy and gray cabinets installed.

But that wasn’t in the plan for us and weirdly, I’m ok with it. Maybe because it has been so long already (one month of washing dishes in a tub and still going strong). Maybe it’s because I am growing up. I have had to learn to roll with whatever comes our way. Like:

  • Drew being gone for his annual meeting for 5 days last week when we had so much to do. Things I cannot do – move plumbing, cap vents, remove old disgusting attic fans and repairing the holes
  • Not passing our full inspection on Friday because we hadn’t moved the plumbing from under one window to the next and the inspector didn’t think me explaining Drew’s plan with hand gestures warranted him passing our plumbing inspection (really? I make really good hand gestures….).
  • A weekend of cursing and crying because I felt like I had fiberglass in every pore of my body from hanging insulation in the ceiling.
  • Drywall crews who didn’t show up the first 2 days they were scheduled but since we aren’t paying for them, we can’t really complain (and it is saving us thousands so I seriously cannot complain about that one).
  • A drywall crew that when they did show up this morning, came without scaffolding or drywall screws or drills or anything really. Like they just showed up in matching T-shirts as if that was enough. So I just finished an 8 am run to Home Depot (Dear Sweet Lord Baby Jesus…THANK YOU for Home Depot) to load up scaffolding in the suburban and am bleeding from my hand and leg from rushing to get it loaded.

But it’s all going to be ok – I think….I hope. I will sit here today and get some work done until my cabinets get delivered and then I will spend the afternoon in the garage staring at them and pretending like I am cooking. If Sarah & Abraham had to wait 90-something years to have a son, I can wait a few months to have a kitchen.
